"I don't have time to do my homework… I just can't keep up at school"

Sometimes you may find it hard to keep up with homework, coursework or revising for exams becasue of your caring role at home.

It is vital that you try and talk to your school and explain what the situation is at home. If you let them know what is happening, then they will be able to offer extra support with your homework, coursework and help you revise for exams.  It will help them to understand why you may be late or not in the lesson.

If you are finding it hard at school emotionally, then you may want to think about talking to a school counsellor in a one to one, confidential meeting.

"I can't go to school today, I'm worried about leaving Mum on her own"

Sometimes you feel that you cannot leave the 'cared for' alone at home, as they are having a bad day, so you don't go to school.

It is important to talk to someone when this is happening, as they can help. You should try talking to your GP or another adult you trust or know well, such as Lynn, Kate or Caroline from the Young Carers Service.

There is a lot of help availiable from your local council, so talking to these people may lift a huge weight off your shoulders and may mean you can go to school or college and not have to worry so much about leaving your cared for person alone.

"I get bullied at school, no one understands what it's like for me"

No one should feel they need to skip school just because of a small group of people, so if you feel you are being bullied it is important to speak to your school. This way they can sort it out and make your life much easier. If you want to speak to someone anonymously then you could ring Childline on 0800 1111.

"Money is tight at home, so I can't afford new books"

If you are at college then you may be entitled to Education Maintenance Allowanc (EMA)

This  can be used for buying new books and equimpment or paying for transport to and from college.  Depending on your family's income you can earn up to £30 a week. Also there is £500 worth of bonuses if you attend all of your lessons and exams.
